Your church does not have music

1)    In Gen. 4 two different instruments are mentioned (the “harp” and the “pipe”).
2)    Gen. 4:21 also makes it clear that more than one person was able to play these instruments.
3)    Based on Gen. 4, instrumental music has been around for a long, long time.
4)    Gen. 31:27 speaks about a farewell.
5)    In Isa. 5:12 God’s prophet mentioned several instruments and said these were used in “feasts.”
In ancient times military victories (2 Chron. 20:27-28) were celebrated with instrumental music.
6)     The book of Exodus (15:20-21) specifically refers to women singing, dancing, and musical instruments.

THERE ARE SEVERAL REFERENCES TO SINGING AND INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC IN THE OT.

a)     The Old Testament has a variety of words to describe music.
b)    The words for VOCAL MUSIC in the OT vastly outnumber the words for instrumental music.

2)    In the Old Testament, singing took the highest place in worship.
In the Old Testament there are more than a dozen words for vocal music.
3)    Under the OT dispensation there are more words for vocal music than instrumental music.
4)    Combined with all the information given there is a hint of something in the18th chapter of 1 Kgs.
5)    1 Kgs. 18:24 says the followers of Baal could call on their God and Elijah would call on Jehovah.
6)    According to 1 Kgs. 18:25-28, the prophets of Baal put on a pretty good show.
7)    Elijah implied worshippers of Baal needed to get the attention of their god.
8)    To get the attention of this pagan god Elijah suggested doing things like shouting or jumping.
9)     2 Chron. 29:25 specifically says instrumental music was used in the OT temple & this was commanded by God.
a)     Instrumental music was used during the Old Testament era, but the emphasis was on vocal music.

THE OLD TESTAMENT, WHICH HAS SOME REFERENCES TO INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC BEING USED TO PRAISE GOD, HAS BEEN REPLACED BY THE NEW TESTAMENT.

a)     In the New Testament we have a few verses which specifically refer to instruments.
b)    We read about “flute players” in Mt. 9:23; 11:17.
c)     In a book filled with figurative language (Revelation) we have a handful of references about instruments.
2)    When it comes to the church, honoring God in this life, and music, the Bible says “sing.”
3)    Along with the word “sing” are a few more words “make music in the heart.”
4)    Vocal music was very important under the OT, but God has taken it to an entirely new level.
5)    Singing (Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16); use the “fruit of our lips” (Heb. 13:15) is what He has said.
6)    If we SING and PLAY, we have added to God’s commandments; we go beyond what is written.
