In this psalm, the Psalmist praises God for deliverance from his enemies. David ascribes his military successes, not to his own ability, or even to the valour of his soldiers, but to God’s favour. He gives all glory to God. He sees God sitting upon His heavenly throne, administering justice, and awarding defeat and death to the wrong-doers (verse 17).
The Psalmist’s faith in God can be seen in this verse: “And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek you” (verse 10, ESV)
It is true that those who know God best trust Him most. The truth of the whole Bible is centred in the truth of this verse. From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible is but an invitation to mankind to trust in God.
Those who know God will trust in Him. I mean those who truly know God. Many do know God by name; they don’t know Him personally. They do not possess the in-depth knowledge of God that is required for real faith. It is for this reason that they blame God when afflictions come into their lives. It is for this reason that some become unfaithful.
All who know God put their trust in Him. David was pursued by his enemies. Yet he said: “For thou, Lord, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.” David knows this truth: God will not forsake those who faithfully trust in Him. They may be tried like Job, but they cling on to their faith. The thought of leaving God never crosses their minds. They may be even have the sense of being forsaken (Psa 22:1); but they know full well that God is always with them.
Do you know God? The more intimate our knowledge of God, the more earnest we trust in Him. The more we learn of His character, the more we begin to appreciate His style of working. God’s love does not mean that He will not let us suffer. How else can we learn to trust God if there is no afflictions to test our faith? It is the same with any love. How much do you love your wife? The true test of love is seen when she falls sick and you are always with her to support her. You did not grumble or complain; you just feel for her and show compassion for her.
The more we know God, the more we will learn to love and trust in Him. We will be drawn closer to Him. God will not forsake anyone who trusts in Him. If you think that God is not beside you, it is perhaps you have moved away from Him: “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you” (Jas 4:8).
The more God is trusted the more He is sought unto. If we trust God we shall seek Him by faithful and fervent prayer. We also seek Him in His words (Psa 1:2). God will never desert anyone that duly seeks Him. Though He afflicts them, He will not leave them comfortless. Though He seems to forsake them for a while, yet He is always there for them: “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me” (Psa 23:4).
I’m not worried about the future. Is it because I don’t care? It’s not. But it’s because I trust that God will take care of it. Worry does not solve anything. And, do you know that most of the things that we worried about never happened. We worry about things that are unlikely to happen; we are bringing needless problems into our lives. Happiness is a choice; and so is worry. Choose to be happy instead.
Know God and you will learn to trust in Him. God knows the future. He has it all laid up in His mind. We just need to follow through in His plan. We just need to trust in Him. He may lay a few obstacles along the way. They are not mountains that cannot be conquered. He knows what we are capable of and He will not test us beyond our abilities (1 Cor 10:13). Do you stop going to school just because you had failed one test? Do you stop driving a car simply because you had one accident?
To know God is to trust in Him. Never give up! “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Pro 3:5-6).
