Israel had been a united nation for many years. God was its "King" for several years. Then the time came when the nation of Israel wanted an earthly king to be like the surrounding nations. God allowed the nation of Israel to have a 40 year reign under Saul. Then David reigned for 40 years. Solomon then reigned over Israel for 40 more years. Then the kingdom of Israel "split" into northern Israel.
One cannot appreciate some parts of the New Testament without having some understanding of the Old Testament.
