WRONG WAY!
Keith Wishum recently wrote about a scary experience:
As a man was driving down the freeway, his car phone
rang. Answering, he heard his wife's voice urgently warning him, “Frank, I just
heard on the news that there's a car going the wrong way on the Interstate.
Please be careful!”
“It's not just ONE car,” said Frank. “It's HUNDREDS of
them!”
Many times you and I can be a lot like Frank. As Wishum says, “We tend to assume that we
are right and that everybody else is wrong.
We cause a lot of collisions in our relationships that way.” *
Yet it is extremely dangerous and sometimes fatal to
insist on going our own way! Scripture
contains this warning: “There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the
end it leads to death” (Proverbs 14:12).
In fact, this warning is so serious, it is repeated in the book of
Proverbs (see 16:25)!
A DEAD END! That’s
where “going our OWN way” (sin) will lead us.
Jesus admonished: “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and
broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by
it. Because narrow is the gate and
difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it”
(Matthew 7:13-14).
But Jesus wants to lead us to life, ETERNAL LIFE. “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift
of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23).
Jesus IS the Way to the ABUNDANT life now (John 10:10)
and ETERNAL life to come. He said, “I AM
the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me”
(John 14:6). There is no other way to
eternal life.
Wishum affirms: “That’s not being mean. It’s not disrespectful. The ‘One Way’ sign is for our benefit. Things turn out much better when we’re headed
the right way.”
“The GOOD NEWS is that the remedy for going the wrong way
in life is as simple as the solution for driving the wrong way on the
interstate,” Wishum counsels.... “JUST
TURN AROUND!” That’s what the Bible
calls “repentance” (see Acts 17:30-31; 2 Corinthians 7:9-10).
We must turn FROM heading in the wrong direction and turn
TO Christ in trusting obedience: placing our faith and trust in Him (Acts
16:30-31), confessing Him before men (Romans 10:9-10), and being baptized
(immersed) into Christ for the forgiveness of our sins (Acts 2:38). Then, we must continue to follow Him, and as
we do, His blood continues to cleanse us from sin (1 John 1:7).
Why should we follow Jesus? Because He gave His life for us so that we
can have forgiveness and receive the gift of eternal life (John 3:16; Ephesians
1:7) AND because He is the ONLY Way to heaven!
Won’t YOU follow THE WAY that leads to LIFE?
