THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME
We have had an interesting vacation the past few weeks.
We have visited the home area where we grew up for the Thanksgiving holidays
and spent lots of time with family and friends. The idea of "home"
has a special meaning to most people.
There is an old Christmas song with the title and words,
"There’s no place like home of the holidays." Through the years I
have come realize that idea is ever changing and evolving, yet one that is
close to the heart of all of us. The theme of the story, "The Wizard of
Oz" is, "There is no place like home." I've seen countless signs
that proclaim, "Home is where you hang you hat," or "Home is
where the heart is," or even a bumper sticker that proclaimed, "My
home has wheels."
Yes, home is an important part of us as humans; it helps
define who we are. Sometimes it gives us a basis for who we become and at times
it gives us direction to change the things in our future.
I really think that there is a lot of truth to the idea
expressed in the words, "Home is where your heart is." And really,
isn't the heart of every true Christian with God? So we can say with confidence
that, "Home is where God is," or even, "home is where God's
children are." The apostle Paul speaks in 2 Corinthians 5, 8-9, of his desire
to "be at home with the Lord". We sing songs that proclaim, "Oh,
they tell me of a home," (in heaven), and about "a mansion over the
hill top". These songs speak to the desire within each of us to have a
"Permanent", everlasting home with our God.
Yes, it has been good to visit our earthly home, but what
we really long for is our eternal home with God. This holiday season remember
what Christ's coming is all about; taking us home!
