Why America needs God

The Decline in Belief in God and the Bible Will Kill Democracy

The reason that our Democratic Republic flourished can be traced to its citizens believing in the God of the Bible and His Word. Scripture served as a standard for morality and ethical behavior. True democracy will not work without an absolute standard for right and wrong that upholds the rights of the weak and limits the power of the strong.

Today, our country is departing from belief in absolute morality and specific standards for behavior based upon the “perfect law of liberty” (Ja2:12). Joseph Kostesich related a statement he had heard why democracy would not work without the “moral underpinnings” of God’s Word. He explained that without moral absolutes that transcend personal preference democracy is nothing more than “mob rule.”(1)
“Suppose you had a society made up of 3 men and 2 women. One of these men proposes a new law which says it is acceptable for men to abuse women. The new law is put up to a vote and the law passes 3 to 2. Is this democracy? No--it is simply mob rule”(1)

The world is a dangerous place when the only thing ruling man is his own intentions and desires. History proves that the “way of man is not within himself,” and that the end of human self direction is destruction (Jer. 10:23; Pro. 14:12). Read about how wicked man became in Noah’s day or during the time of the judges. People left to do whatever is right in their own eyes are wicked and cruel and fill their lives with evil (Ge 6:5; Ju 17:6).

Evidence of this exists in our country. When people ignore God’s directives humanity suffers even with government sanction. Our country still wears scars of the maltreatment of the native indigenous people of this land, the history of slavery, the many injustices based on skin color and national heritage. Had people followed God’s law “love your neighbor as yourself,” none of those things would have been approved by our democracy. More recently, we are excluding unborn children from the “inalienable rights” granted by our constitution. Our elderly citizens and terminally sick people are in danger of losing those same rights. Doesn’t this prove that we are abandoning God’s way for the way of man’s wicked imagination. We will continue decline and more people will suffer from the “mob rule” of society unless we return to God’s standard of right and wrong.

Democracy only works when everyone is held equally to a higher law than the one he invents himself. As we grow older as a nation have become like the Israelites forgetting that God’s rules and respect for His ways made our nation great? Have we abandoned righteousness and the protection of God’s word for the weak, under-privileged.

I pray for our nation, our leaders and for all citizens to return to God’s way. No matter the government type God’s people are blessed for following God. When people are guided by the precepts of Scripture it exalts the nation in which they live (Pro 14:34). Citizens of the Kingdom of God preserve the nations of man (Mt 5:13).
