1Ki 10:1 And when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the LORD, she came to prove him with hard questions.

Solomon’s wisdom and wealth spread far and wide. Everyone heard of him and was talking about him. They gave him the thumb up. Most did not get to see or hear him personally, but what they heard they believed. But one woman wasn’t convinced. She was the queen of Sheba.

Who was the queen of Sheba? Some painted her as a black princess from Ethiopia. Jesus called her the queen of the South (Matthew 12:42). Most historians think she was a princess from South Arabia.  Anyway, that’s not important. The important thing is she was skeptical about everything she had heard about Solomon. So, she travelled 2000 kilometres to prove she was right and Solomon wasn’t what everyone thought he was. She came to Jerusalem to see and ask Solomon difficult questions.

We may think the queen of Sheba was a proud woman. But we must remember she was no ordinary woman. She was a queen; therefore, she must be rich. She had a kingdom and so she must have been very pleased with its running and administration and hence, was not convinced that someone 2000Km away could outdo hers. She came to see for herself and to test Solomon with hard questions. It implies she must be very knowledgeable and no fool. Perhaps, she held the title as the wisest woman in the world and suddenly someone upstaged her. So, she came to see who that guy was.

She came, she saw, she heard, and she was convinced. She was completely overwhelmed by the wisdom of Solomon and the glory of his kingdom. The Scripture says there was no more spirit in her (v.5). She was astonished, convinced, and humbled by her experience.

What Can We Learn From This Record Of The Visit Of The Queen Of Sheba?
1. King Solomon had to prove his own worth; he passed the test.
Likewise, as Christians, we have to prove our worthy calling that we are children of God. Paul says we are to walk worthy of the vocation wherewith we are called (Ephesians 4:1). And, this is done by bearing fruits of good works: “That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God” (Colossians 1:10).

What does the world expect of Christians? They expect us to love. They expect us to be kind and charitable. They expect us to be like Jesus. Our Lord Himself said: “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another” (John 13:34, 35).

How does the world know we are true Christians? By our LOVE! What if they see hate, or an unforgiving spirit, or quarrels among us?  They will say: “Are you sure you are a Christian?”

2. King Solomon answered every difficult question posted to him.
We are commanded to have ready answers to all men who question our faith (1 Peter 3:15). When your friends ask why you believe in God; do you have an answer?

We must be able to defend our faith (Jude 1:3). The command to give an answer is given to all Christians and not just the preacher and elders. Can you give answers about your faith?

The queen of Sheba left Jerusalem fully convinced and satisfied – Solomon was truly who he really was; just as they said. How about us? Are our friends and neighbours convinced we are indeed Christians and not just a bunch of folks who go to church? “Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity” (Titus 2:7, ESV).
