1Ki 16:31 And it came to pass, as if it had been a light thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, that he took to wife Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Zidonians, and went and served Baal, and worshipped him.

1Ki 16:31  And it came to pass, as if it had been a light thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, that he took to wife Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Zidonians, and went and served Baal, and worshipped him.

Ahab succeeded his father as king of Israel. Ahab was super evil. The scripture says: “And Ahab the son of Omri did evil in the sight of the LORD above all that were before him” (v.30). He exceeded all his predecessors in wickedness. And, what was his attitude towards doing evil? The record says: “And it came to pass, as if it had been a light thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat,” (v.31).

What does it mean by “a light thing”? The BDB Bible Dictionary says: “to appear trifling, be too trifling, be insignificant” (e-sword). It literally means, it wasn’t a big deal.

It wasn’t a big deal to Ahab to break the first and second commandments: “Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image” (Exodus 20:3, 4).

The scribe records that “Ahab did more to provoke the LORD God of Israel to anger than all the kings of Israel that were before him” (v.33). Ahab was one man who was not afraid to offend God.

Ahab introduced Baal to Israel and it was to him no big deal. What about us? Are there sins in our lives that we consider as “no big deals”? Many professed Christians find ways to justify certain things Christians shouldn’t be doing. Brethren, are these no big deals?
Is a little lie no big deal?
Is a pre-marital sex no big deal?
Is a little hatred no big deal? (I don’t hate everybody; just that brother.)
Is a little wine no big deal?
Is same marriage sex no big deal?
Is parading in near nakedness no big deal?

It is possible to trivialize anything someone might prefer to do, making it “no big deal” or “I’m only human’ or “No one is perfect”.

Is sin really a “no big deal”? If it is, why did the Son of God have to come down and die for the sins of the world? (John 1:29). What would heaven be like if a little sin exists there because it is no big deal? If we were allowed into heaven with our “no big deals”, heaven would no longer be perfect!

What is the big deal about sin? Well, it caused the blood of the Son of God to remove it (John 3:16). Christ did not die on the cross so that we can keep our “no big deal” sins? Yes, Christ died for the homosexuals, murderers, thieves, adulterers, and idolaters, etc. But, He did not die so that they can remain as homosexuals, murderers, thieves, adulterers, and keep their idols. He came to call them out of darkness into His marvelous light; not to stay in darkness (1 Peter 2:9). If the homosexual can remain in his homosexuality, the murderer can continue to kill and the thieves continue to steal.

When we look at sin we tend to trivialize it. We categorise it into big sin and small sin. But look how Jesus viewed sin. We say murder is big sin and anger is small sin. But in the Sermon on the Mount, our Lord says that carrying anger is a big deal (Matthew 5:20-25). He says our anger towards a brother needs to be dealt with before we even walk through the doors of the church. He says failing to do so puts one in danger of the judgment. Anger is a big deal sin to God!

Brethren, sin is sin whether it is big or small. A hater is the same as a murderer in God’s eyes (1 John 3:15). Do not make light of sin! Quit before it is too late.
