Ezekiel was one of the Jewish exiles who settled at
Tel-Abib, on the banks of the Chebar, “in the land of the Chaldeans.” His name
means "God will strengthen". He was a priest of God. He was probably
carried away captive with King Jehoiachin (Ezekiel 1:2; 2Kings 24:14-16) about
597 B.C.. His prophetic call came to him “in the fifth year of Jehoiachin's
captivity” (594 B.C.).
The prophet Ezekiel was blessed to see a heavenly
vision of God. In the vision he saw four living creatures. Each of the four
living creatures had four faces, that of a man, lion, ox, and eagle. And all
had four wings. And they had the hands of a man under their wings (vs 8). “Their
appearance was like burning coals of fire, like the appearance of torches
moving to and fro among the living creatures. And the fire was bright, and out
of the fire went forth lightning” (vs 13, ESV).
Next to each creature was a “wheel” (vs 15). When the
living creatures moved, the wheel beside them moved too. “Over the heads of
the living creatures there was the likeness of an expanse, shining like
awe-inspiring crystal, spread out above their heads”” (vs 22). And above
the expanse over their heads there was Ezekiel saw a sapphire throne (vs 26).
And on that throne, Ezekiel saw the glory of God with His brightness round
about Him (vs 27). When he saw the glory of God sitting n his throne, he fell
down and worship (vs 28).
Ezekiel's vision of the four living creatures in
Ezekiel chapter 1 are identified as cherubims in chapter 10 who are God's
throne bearers. The sight of the cherubims was awesome but reverence belongs to
God. Ezekiel fell down and worship when he saw the glory of God; he did not do
it for the cherubs.
Indeed, GOD is the only proper and supreme object of
reverence. Within limits it is right and good that we should honour and revere
our fellow men. The child may justly revere the parent, the pupil to the
teacher, and the citizens to the king. But they do not worship them! There is
but One who may be revered with no qualification, with no reserve, and who only
we must worship; He is God.
The Divine attributes are such that, the more we study
them, the more we shall find in them deserving our reverence and worship (read
Psalms 93-100). Why would one choose to worship Mary, angels, or “Saints”? The
apostle John saw an angel and fell down to worship him but he was forbidden by
the angel who told him: “Worship God” (Revelations 22:8-9).
Recently in a family gathering, I learned that my used
to be infidel nephew has become a New Creation follower. How did he become a
New Creation follower? He was coerced to listen to Joseph Prince, founder of
the New Creation church. Out of curiosity, he went to listen to Joseph Prince.
He was captivated by prince’s charisma. He kept talking about Joseph Prince,
nothing about God and Jesus. He still does not read the bible. And he knows
less about Joseph Prince than me. And Jesus Christ is still a stranger to him.
Who is he worshipping?
Also, my once very staunched Buddhist sister-in-law
has joined City Harvest church. Again, it’s because of one person – its
founder. Who is her God? I doubt she knows Him. God says: “For thou shalt
worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God”
(Exodus 34:14).
Ezekiel says: "I fell upon my face"
(vs 28). Ezekiel chose to worship God and no one else. How about you? Who is
your object of worship? “Thou shalt worship the Lord
thy God, and him only shalt thou serve” (Matthew 4:10). Worship God!
