In this psalm, the psalmist utters his complaint
against wicked oppressors (vs 1-6). The wicked thought God does not see their wicked
deeds nor is concerned with them (vs 8). The psalmist says God who made the
eyes and ears sees and hears every wicked things they do and say (vs 9-11).He
then shows that God will plead the cause of the righteous who suffer (vs
12-15). He concludes with the confident assurance that his enemies, and all
other wicked men, would certainly be made to reap the due reward of their
deeds: "yea, the Lord our God shall cut them off" (vs
16-23).
"How long shall the wicked triumph?”
(vs 2) - This is one question we want to know too. Thousands of years have
passed, and the world has grown even more wicked than before. Don’t you think
so? Some nations openly reject God’s counsel. Some may claim to be Christian
nations, but their actions and ungodly agendas demonstrate that do not have
God.
The psalmist asks: “Shall the throne of iniquity
have fellowship with thee, which frameth mischief by a law?” (vs 20). The
allusion is to wicked governments that enact laws that approve sinful deeds.
Such are all the laws which authorise or uphold abortion, gay marriages,
divorces, lotteries, pornographies, evolutions, suppress religion, and etc. God
will have no alliance with unjust governments; He gives no sanction to
unrighteous legislation “which frameth mischief by a law”; making sin
lawful.
Since God will have no part with wicked rulers who
devise evil laws, so neither should we! Christians should not align themselves
with wicked politicians by voting for them and supporting their evil decrees.
We should take a leaf from Moses: “By faith Moses, when he was come to
years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter; Choosing rather
to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin
for a season; Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the
treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the
reward. By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for
he endured, as seeing him who is invisible (Hebrews 11:24-27).
Moses made a choice to be right with God and not
Egypt. If you are a science teacher and you are expected to teach evolution to
your students, what will you choose? If you are a doctor and is asked to
perform an abortion, what will you choose? If you are a lawyer and is asked to
defend a gay couple's marriage, what will you choose? A NO choice may mean you
will lose your job.
I know how Moses will choose. You see, one reason the
wicked triumph is because those who know to do right choose to remain silent or
cave in under pressure.
The psalmist asks: “Who will stand up for me
against the workers of iniquity?” (vs 16). The expression, “stand up” means
“to take a stand”. The apostle Peter wrote: “Be ready always to give an
answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you” (1
Peter 3:15). “To give an answer” is to defend, to take a stand, to make a
response. Are you ready to take a stand on the way of the wicked?
"The wicked triumph" when no man takes a
stand for the truth. Many nations reject God and make laws contrary to the law
of God because there is none who stands up for the truth. False teachings
abound today because few are contending for the faith (Jude 1:3).
The psalmist says: “But the LORD is my defence; and
my God is the rock of my refuge. And he shall bring upon them their own
iniquity, and shall cut them off in their own wickedness; yea, the LORD our God
shall cut them off” (Vs 22-23).
His trust is in God. He will not follow the multitude
to do evil (Exodus 23:2). He knows God will cut the wicked off. The wicked will
not triumph; this is our confidence. Let us choose to be on God’s side.
