Psa 103:2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.

In Psalm 103, the Psalmist David seeks to remind us about the benefits of God: “Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits” (v.2). David is speaking from personal experience. He mentions a number of blessings which he has received from God.

1. Forgiveness. “Who forgiveth all thine iniquities” (v.3a). David remembered his adultery with Bathsheba and his murder of Uriah. How could anyone forgive such heinous sins? Yet, God forgave him. How did God forgive? David wrote: “As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us” (v.12).

The idea is when God forgives, He throws the sin so far away it’s not coming back to haunt us anymore. The word “forgiveth” means He continues to forgive. We will never stop sinning, but as long as we come to Him confessing our sin, He is willing and just to forgive us (1 John 1:9).

2. Redemption. “Who redeemeth thy life from destruction” (v.4). David remembered the many times God delivered him from his enemies.

The most wonderful redemption is the redemption of our souls from eternal damnation. Sin brings about eternal death (Romans 6:23). But God redeems us from the penalty of sin and grants us eternal life (John 3:16).

3. Satisfaction. “Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things” (v.5). God may not give us what we want, but He certainly gives us what we need: “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33).

From verses 6-19, David exalts the mercies of God to those who keep His covenant. It is because God is merciful that human beings are not consumed by His wrath: “The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy” (v.8).

The benefits of God. Who can enumerate them? David reminds us not to forget His benefits. Indeed, every good thing is a blessing, a benefit from God. James says: “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning” (James 1:17).

Let us never forget this: EVERYTHING IS GOD’S BY CREATION. David declares: “The earth is the LORD'S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein” (Psalm 24:1). We owe our very existence to God: “For in him we live, and move, and have our being” (Acts 17:28a). It is God who gives us the ability, wisdom, and capacity to obtain things. His gifts are innumerable; who can forget them? Unfortunately, many, including saints, have forgotten His benefits.

When we go through difficult times in life, it can be easy to forget what God had done to sustain us in the past. We recall the forgetfulness of the children of Israel. No sooner were they delivered from slavery, they complained against God: “Would to God we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh pots, and when we did eat bread to the full; for ye have brought us forth into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger” (Exodus 16:3).

God is faithful; but we have short memories. Therefore, we need constant reminders: “Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits” (v.2). “Count your blessings, name them one by one.” Let us give God the credit for every achievement, success, happiness, blessings, and good times, that we have enjoyed. Let us never forget His benefits.
