Our prayer this week is for God to help us acquire certain
characteristics of children. As a father of young children, I do not
always consider looking to them for biblical lessons. In reality, I am
overlooking a great resource for lessons.
We only have one story recorded in the bible of Jesus during his
adolescence (Luke 2.41-52). For several days Jesus was without his
parents and, as far as we can tell, lacking supervision. How many
children of twelve years of age would seek to listen to religious teachers in
this situation? In fact, how many adults even model this desire of Jesus?
Even at an early age Jesus demonstrates His clear priorities.
We learn many great lessons about children in general from the
scriptures. Jesus used a child as a model for humility (Matthew 18.1-4)
in the midst of various disciples seeking greatness and status. As
children, Christians are to imitate their Father (Ephesians 5.1). We are
to walk as children of light (Ephesians 5.8), be different than the world
(Philippians 2.15), and practice righteousness (1 John 3.10).
“Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed upon us,
that we should be called children of God” (1 John 3.1). Thankfully, we
have a Father who desires to help us to understand and live out this
reality. Let us earnestly seek our Father’s help this week. After
all, the kingdom belongs only to the “child-like” followers of God (Luke
18.15-17).
Lord, make me a child
