Psa 104:1 Bless the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, thou art very great; thou art clothed with honour and majesty.
The topic of the psalm is the greatness of God as seen in His works. David, the psalmist, praised God for His majestic power as seen in the creation. Indeed, “Let them praise the name of the LORD: for his name alone is excellent; his glory is above the earth and heaven” (Psalm 148:13).
When your faith is down, look at the creation: “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork” (Psalm 19:1). The universe proclaims there is a God.
When God designed the creation, He has everything covered and taken care of. No birds or animals have to worry about their food: “He sendeth the springs into the valleys, which run among the hills. They give drink to every beast of the field: the wild asses quench their thirst” (v.10, 11).
It reminds me of the words of our Lord Jesus Christ in the Sermon on the Mount: “Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?” (Matthew 6:26).
If God cares so much for birds and beasts, He will care very much more for us, His children by faith in Jesus Christ. So, Paul wrote: “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God” (Philippians 4:6).
Be careful for nothing – It means do not be anxious for anything; don’t worry about anything. As Christ said, we are better than the birds of the air and flowers of the fields and if God takes care of them, He will take better care of us. David concurs and wrote in Psalm 37:25: “I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.”
In life, we hardly proclaim these important words of faith, The Lord will provide. We go through life believing we will manage by our own. But in Genesis 22, we read the story of Abraham being commanded by God to take his son Isaac to Mount Moriah and offer him as a sacrifice to Him. Abraham obeyed and went. When Isaac said to him they had the wood and fire but where was the lamb for the burnt offering, Abraham answered: “God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering” (Genesis 22:8). That was his faith. He obeyed in the belief that:
1. God would provide a miracle of some kind, and God did – a ram caught in a thicket as a substitute sacrifice (Genesis 22:13).
2. God would raise Isaac: “He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back” (Hebrews 11:19, ESV).
Abraham called that place Jehovah-jireh which means, The LORD will provide (Genesis 22:14). One of the most comforting words in the Bible is this statement, The LORD will provide. Paul declares in Philippians 4:19: “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” It implies, God knows you have financial needs and will supply your every need. He knows you have a health problem and will take care of it; He knows what you are going through. He knows your needs and suffering. Note that God will supply ALL your needs but not all your greed.
When we cast all our cares on the Lord, we’ll be amazed at the wondrous way He provides! But that’s not all! God provides for all our needs, but in particular He provides for the most fundamental need man has known since the fall: the need for a sacrifice. Christ, the only begotten Son of God, provides the needs of the sinner who is totally unable to do so himself; He becomes the Lamb that takes away the sins of the world (John 1:29). The Lord will provide!
God provides for our physical and spiritual needs. Can you see the almighty hands of God in the work of Providence?
