Psa 108:13 Through God we shall do valiantly: for he it is that shall tread down our enemies.

Psalm 108 tells us to praise God. It ends with these words: “Through God we shall do valiantly: for he it is that shall tread down our enemies” (v.13).

Through God we shall do valiantly – From God we derive our courage, strength, and success. We may be beaten in the battle of life. We may sustain serious afflictions and losses like Job. We may suffer substantial loss in some venture. We may be undergoing a very rough patch in a relationship. We may be experiencing a serious health issue. Indeed, the sky is falling down on us: “O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?” (Romans 7:24).

David knew what it was like to face overwhelming circumstances and constant trouble. How did he overcome those trying times? He trusted in God: “Through God we shall do valiantly: for he it is that shall tread down our enemies” (v.13).

David declared before all: "Through God..." He had total confidence in the Power and Promises of God to see him through any circumstance or battle with his enemies. He knew he couldn’t do anything by his own; so he engaged God’s help: “Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God” (Psalm 20:7)

Oftentimes God waits until we are brought to the end of our resources and the insufficiency of all the human counsellors around us to help us. It is to help us to learn to trust in Him: “Give us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man” (v.12).

Give us help from trouble – Who does not have troubles? To have trouble is the common lot of all men. Job says man’s days are few and full of trouble (Job 14:1). He is not only troubled, but full of trouble. There are so much cares and anxieties; so much worries, miseries, and pain.

How can we overcome the anxieties in life? Through God, of course: “Through God we shall do valiantly.” The choice is ours: “Do we trust God?”

The writer of Hebrews warns us of the many obstacles that will hinder us from going to heaven (Hebrews 12:1). Yes, life has many obstacles. And, obstacles aren’t fun to deal with. But some of these obstacles are our own choices. The Hebrew writer calls it “weights”. What are these “weights”. They are the sins we embrace. They may be our job, a sinful relationship, an addiction, money, sexual sin, hobbies, etc. They keep us from moving forward in our spiritual journey. To reach our eternal goal, we must remove those “weights”. The Hebrew writer calls it “the sin which doth so easily beset us”.  The word “beset” means to stand around. It means the sins which stand around us.

We don’t want to admit it. But everyone has some sins that are surrounding him. They are the sins he finds it hard to get rid of. In fact, he finds ways to justify those sins. One easy way out is to say that well, everyone has them: “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone” (John 8:7).

We don’t like trials, yet there’s no spiritual growth without trials. It’s only in times of trials we remember God: “Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses” (Psalm 107:6). An example is the apostle Peter. On one occasion, Peter was walking on water to Jesus. But, “But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me” (Matthew 14:30). He called out to Jesus. Only Jesus can keep us afloat.

Let us look to Jesus and rely on His strength to help us overcome. Paul says: “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me” (Philippians 4:13). Do you trust Jesus?
