Psa 109:2 For the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of the deceitful are opened against me: they have spoken against me with a lying tongue.

Probably David penned this psalm when he was persecuted by Saul, or when his son Absalom rebelled against him. He refers to a certain enemy that seems to be referring to Athithophel (v.6-20). And, as we read his cursing on that certain enemy, we wonder is it the right thing to do? Should we be cursing our enemies in our prayers? What did David entreat the LORD concerning his enemy? 1. “Let Satan stand at his right hand” (v.6b). The word rendered “Satan” means an adversary. As how David’s enemy has treated him, let the devil do the same to him. 2. “When he shall be judged, let him be condemned: and let his prayer become sin” (v.7). As how his enemy has condemned him, let him also be condemned. 3. “Let his days be few” (v.8a). Let his life be shortened. 4. “Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow” (v.9). Such is the consequence his enemy’s family will suffer when his life is cut short. 5. “Let his children be continually vagabonds, and beg” (v.10a). Poverty when the bread winner is gone. 6. “Let the extortioner catch all that he hath” (v.11a). More misery when the creditors come and take over all his possessions. 7. “Let no one be kind to him. Let no one show mercy to his children” (v.12). Let the world turns its face on his family. 8. “May his family come to an end” (v.13). No descendants. 9. “Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered with the LORD” (v.14). No forgiveness from God. Did David pray against his enemies and devote them to destruction? Maybe not! We recall that Peter quoted part of this psalm (v.8b) when referring to Judas Iscariot’s office: “Let his habitation be made desolate, And let no man dwell therein: and, His office let another take” (Acts 1:20, ASV; cf. Psalm 69:25). Peter said David was a prophet when he spoke of Christ’s resurrection (Acts 2:30). He said David spoke about Christ in his psalm (Acts 2:25). We know David spoke about his trials and persecutions. Yet, in the spirit of prophecy, he spoke about Christ. David declared: “The Spirit of the LORD spake by me, and his word was in my tongue” (2 Samuel 23:2). As a prophet inspired by the Spirit of God, David wrote concerning Judas Iscariot. As we read again the nine points listed above, we can place the face of Judas in each of them. Judas could be married and with children. His untimely death certainly brought hardship on them. As Christians, Christ says we ought to pray for our enemies but for their good and not evil: “But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you”(Matthew 5:44, emphasis mine). We are tempted to curse our enemies; Christ says bless them and pray for them. Do not give our enemies a reason to accuse us before God? As Christians we must remember that we are constantly being watched like a hawk by unbelievers. We can be doing everything right, but as soon as we make one wrong move, unbelievers will have something to say, especially about our faith. Satan stands to accuse us before God day and night (Revelation 12:10). But when we love our enemies it helps us conform into the image of Christ. Therefore, don’t curse our enemies; pray for them.
