The Law given at Mount Sinai has ten Commandments of which six relates to our relationship with men. Many other laws are expansion on those six commandments. It’s like reading a law book, going into details how the law is to mete out punishments when violated. Paul says the New Covenant is nothing like the Old. He says: “For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself” (v.14). Christ says the Law and the prophets hung upon these two commandments: Love God and love thy neighbour (Matthew 22:36-40). That is, they are the substance of what the Law and what the prophets had been saying – love God and love men. Paul says: “Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law” (Romans 13:10). The same love that restrains us from doing evil incites us to do good. Love will cause us to do good. If we love someone, we will have only the best for him in our hearts and actions. Let’s take a look at the last six of the Ten Commandments: Exo 20:12 Honour thy father and thy mother. Exo 20:13 Thou shalt not kill. Exo 20:14 Thou shalt not commit adultery. Exo 20:15 Thou shalt not steal. Exo 20:16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. Exo 20:17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife,…...nor any thing that is thy neighbour's. People violate those six commandments because they do not love. When we love our parents, we will honour them. When we love our neighbour, we will not kill him, steal from him, bear false witness against him, nor covet his wife or anything that belongs to him. When we love our spouses, we will not be unfaithful to them; we will not commit adultery. Love will cover a multitude of sins (1 Peter 4:8). We will not do anything that is hurtful to anyone we love. Love prevents us from committing sin against our fellow being. Love prettily sums up everything that is in the Law. When we love, our attitudes and actions satisfy the demands of the Law. That’s what “fulfill” means. It’s not about prophecy being fulfilled; it’s about thoughts and actions that correspond to what the Law requires. Christian love is an action: “But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?” (1 John 3:17). Christian love means we do not act in selfish ways to others. Christian love is a commandment (John 13:34). The reason it is commanded is because it is not in us to love our enemies, strangers, and those who do not love us. Hence, Christian love involves the will; the will to obey God’s commandment to love. We would love to return an eye for an eye, but because we decide to act on love, we return good for evil: “But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you” (Matthew 5:44). Love will cause us to be patient and kind (1 Corinthians 13:4). Love covers everything we need to do to be a godly Christian. When we decide to walk in love, these will disappear in our lives - anger, hatred, malice, impatient and many other sins. So, let us love, as Christ has loved us (Ephesians 5:2). |
