Isa 3:16 Moreover the LORD saith, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with stretched forth necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet.

Isaiah 3 is about the judgement on Judah and Jerusalem. Isaiah announces that calamities are about to come upon the land (v.1-9), the wickedness of the people (v.10-15), and the distress of the proud, luxurious women of Zion (16-26).

I will like to bring our attention to the pride of the women of Zion mentioned from verses 16 to 26. What were the sins of those women? The Easy-to-read version summaries it well: “The women in Zion have become very proud. They walk around with their heads in the air, acting like they are better than other people. They flirt with their eyes and make tinkling sounds with their ankle bracelets as they take their quick little steps” (v.16, ERV).

God says He is going to remove all the jewelleries, perfumes, and the beautiful garments from those women: “Instead of perfume there will be rottenness; and instead of a belt, a rope; and instead of well-set hair, baldness; and instead of a rich robe, a skirt of sackcloth; and branding instead of beauty” (v.24, ESV).

It’s a sad picture: Their perfumes will be replaced with horrible smells. They will wear a rope instead of a fanciful belt. They will go bald.  Instead of expensive and beautiful clothes, they will be wearing sackcloth, and all their beauty will be taken away from them.

Remember that this is a prophecy and the things described are in prophetic language and not to be taken literally. The vainglorious women were a type of Jerusalem in its apostasy. Judah has become like an adulterous woman. Because Judah is rich, she has become very proud. God will strip her bare and the entire nation will be carried into Babylon. The city and the land will be made desolate because their words and works have been rebellious against the Lord.

Isaiah is not anti-women. But the state of moral decay in a society is seen by its women. When women have become covetous, lustful, immoral, worldly, and shameless, it is the corruption of an entire society.

God notices the folly and vanity of proud women, even of their dress. Yet, some Christian women today seem to think there is no harm in worldly finery. But, were it not a great evil, would God have mentioned it so explicitly to the prophet? Note Peter’s command to the Christian women: “Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear—but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious” (1 Peter 3:2-4. ESV)

The Bible does not mandate a particular dress code for women. But it does give a few guidelines that women should follow in their clothing choices. God clearly indicates His desire for women to hide their nakedness from others, and to dress in a modest way that glorifies God: “Likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire” (1 Timothy 2:9. ESV).

The purpose of clothing is to cover our nakedness; it should not reveal what God has made to be private (Leviticus 18:9). Therefore, God expects us to wear clothing for the main purpose of hiding our nakedness. Sadly, many people in society today celebrate their nakedness.

Does your clothing glorify God? Does it cover your nakedness? Does it cause others to sin? Think about it.
