Psa 125:1 A Song of degrees. They that trust in the LORD shall be as mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth forever.

Psa 125:1  A Song of degrees. They that trust in the LORD shall be as mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth forever.

Psalm 125 states this simple but profound truth: “They that trust in the LORD shall be as mount Zion” (v.1). To understand the analogy, we need first to understand Mount Zion.

Jerusalem was built on top of Mount Zion. Mount Zion is high, but not as high as the surrounding mountains. Nonetheless, like all mountains, Mount Zion is solid as a Rock; it cannot be moved.

Verse 2 says: “As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about his people from henceforth even forever.”

The Psalmist compares the surrounding mountains to God’s protection on His people. The LORD is not simply at our side, but He surrounds us on every side. And, like the surrounding mountains that never move away from their positions, God’s protection is forever: “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee” (Hebrews 13:5b).

In summary, those who truly trust in God are:
1. Steadfast - Their faith wavers not.
2. Secure – They have the greatest Person who is guarding them.

The above is true only for those who truly trust in God. For such, their faith is unmovable. Whereas, for those who only profess to have faith, this will happen to them: “Yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away” (Matthew 13:20, 21, ESV).

True believers are like a mountain – strong, steadfast, and secure. They are not afraid when persecutions and afflictions enter their lives. Some may ask: “Is it possible?” The answer is YES.

Job was one fine example of one who lost everything – his children, possessions, and his own health. His wife couldn’t stand it and asked him to renounce God and die. She is saying: “What’s the use of keeping our faith in God. Look at us. Our children are dead. Our possessions are gone. Look at you; only death can ease your suffering.” She was rebuked by her husband: “Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil?” (Job 2:10). Job’s faith was strong, steadfast, and secure.

We are now living in uncertain times. A virus has created havoc in the world. The stock market is going one direction – DOWNWARDS. Many companies have gone under and many have lost their jobs. I guess everyone is worried about the future. Bosses worried about their companies’ survival while workers worried about their jobs. Everyone is feeling insecure.

Whenever you feel unsettled or insecure, read Psalms 125. God’s people are as safe and secure as Mount Zion surrounded by the other mountains. Yes, God promised to surround us like the mountains that surround Jerusalem.

In 2 Kings 6:8-23, the King of Syria sent his army to arrest the prophet Elisha. They surrounded the city. Elisha’s servant was terrified, seeing the vast army surrounding the city. Elisha, however, was unperturbed and said: “Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them” (v.16). As the Lord then opened the eyes of the servant, the Scripture says: “He saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha” (v.17). God’s protection surrounded His Prophet!

If your faith in Christ is strong, you are safe and secure. You are like Mount Zion which cannot be shaken. I would like to close with this beautiful verse: “But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels” (Hebrews 12:22).
