These words are found in what seems like a
very unusual context: a discussion of the resurrection! It goes on to add this:
“Wake up from your drunken stupor, as is right, and do not go on sinning. For
some have no knowledge of God. I say this to your shame.” 1 Corinthians
15:33-34. Then notice this: “But avoid irreverent babble, for it will lead
people into more and more ungodliness, and their talk will spread like
gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, who have swerved from the
truth, saying that the resurrection has already happened. They are upsetting
the faith of some. But God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: “The
Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of the
Lord depart from iniquity.” 2 Timothy 2:16-19
The point in both passages is really the same:
stay away from people who might deceive or even ruin you with false doctrine.
In the above two instances, it is concerning the resurrection, but there are
plenty more doctrines to be deceived about! “The Lord knows those who are his.”
You should too. Spend your time with them!!
