Lying and believing a lie are both condemned in the scriptures. It is funny that in this life many demand the truth but when it matters most to their eternal destiny, many would settle for a lie. They want their children to tell the truth. They want the sellers to tell the truth about their products. They want the governments to tell the truth. But they don’t mind a preacher preaching lies to them.

What is not from the word of God is a lie. One either preaches the truth or a lie. Our God hates those who lie about the word of truth. He pronounced a curse on those who preach lies: “But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed” (Galatians 1:8).

The devil says: “Truth is a matter of one’s interpretation.” It means, what you believe to be the truth is truth then. Well, that’s a lie. For, if that’s the case, then, who is a false teacher? The scriptures call their doctrines the doctrines of devil (1 Timothy 4:1). Many good people will realise too late when they stand before God on the Judgment Day that they have been believing a lie all these years. And the sad truth is, no one has ever been saved by believing a lie.

Yes, many are honest and sincere. There are many sincere and honest people who are believing in other religions. Many more are idol worshippers. Are they saved? The Bible points us to ONE true and living God. It also points out Jesus Christ as the only Saviour, for Jesus said: "Except ye believe that I am he, ye shall die in your sins" (John 8:24 ASV).

False teachers want us to believe that it makes very little (if any) difference in religious matters what a man believes, so long as he believes in Jesus. That’s the greatest lie that is preached by the devil. It shows a total disregard for the word of God. And, the fact is, most people are led to error because they are ignorant of the word of God (Matthew 22:29). They listen to just about anything, except God’s word! As a result, they listen to lies and believe in them.

But some choose to believe a lie. Some just do not want the truth. In fact, they hate the truth. And, the reason is: they love their sins: “That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness” (2 Thessalonians 2:12).

They like their sins lies so much that they have pleasure doing them. The homosexuals love their sin so much they won’t want to hear the truth. The adulterer and adulteress love their adulterous relationship so much they won’t want to listen to God’s law about marriage. The drunken love their drink so much they won’t want to listen to the teachings about holiness.

The homosexuals, adulterers, drunkards, wicked, and the immoral, want to hear deceitful preaching that tells them they are not doing anything wrong. Isaiah said of such ungodly people: “Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits” (Isaiah 30:10).

Where are the God-fearing women who obey their husbands and wear modest clothing? Where are the Christian men who value fidelity, truth, honour and the chastening of the Lord? Where are the righteous who hate sins? They are but very few godly men and women who would love the truth and hate the garments spotted by the flesh (Jude 1:23). May God help us to deny ungodliness and worldly lusts, so that we will live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world (Titus 2:12).
