Before
ascending Mount Nebo, to take a view of the land he was not permitted to enter
and then to die there, Moses gave his last message to the people he had been
leading for forty years. It was a message of final blessings to the tribes of
Israel.
A
beautiful scene was described in this opening benediction: “The LORD came
from Sinai, and rose up from Seir unto them; he shined forth from mount Paran,
and he came with ten thousands of saints: from his right hand went a fiery law
for them” (verse 2). It was a majestic scene of the divine glory: The LORD
came with ten thousands of saints and in His right hand was His fiery law.
The
scene resembles another scene recorded in the New Testament. It is found
in Jude 1:14-15: “And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of
these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his
saints, To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly
among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of
all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.”
When
Christ comes again, it will be a day of Judgment. He will execute judgement on
the ungodly and convince (that is to prove them to be in the wrong, to convict)
them of their ungodly deeds and speeches they had made against Him. Those words
were uttered by Enoch, a man who lived before Noah’s time. What does it show?
It shows that from a very early time, even before the Great Flood, man had
known there would be a judgement day. It was one of those great truths early
communicated to man to warn them about sin, and to lead him to prepare for this
great event which is to occur on the earth.
The
reason why men lived the way they always do is because they don’t think there
is a judgment day. But the word of God declares: “And as it is appointed
unto men once to die, but after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27).
The
judgment is as sure as death. Paul describes the second coming of Christ in
these words: “When the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his
mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God,
and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished
with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory
of his power” (2 Thessalonians 1:7-9).
These
people will face the wrath of God at the judgment day: (1) Those who do not
worship the true God but worship idols; (2) Those that have heard the gospel
but would not obey (Mark 16:16); (3) The Jews, particularly who have rejected
Christ and His Gospel (Romans 10:1); (4) Christians who have fallen away
(Hebrews 10:26-27); (5) False teachers (Matthew 7:21) and (6) Unfruitful
Christians (Matthew 7:19).
To
the ungodly, the second coming of Christ instills fear. But to the saints, Paul
wrote: “When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired
in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that
day” (2 Thessalonians 1:10).
The
wicked will tremble when they face the fiery law in His right hand. But the
faithful saints will look upon Christ with wonder and admiration. Which group
do you belong?
